The Ability to Let Go

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt in life so far, is knowing when to let go. We often struggle to face the reality that while some people are meant to be in our lives, some are not.

I once knew someone who wasn’t who I believed them to be. I wanted so badly to believe the best in them, that I had difficulty accepting them for who they really were. However, once I realised that they were far from what I wanted in my life, I made sure to distance myself. And it has proven to be the best decision I have ever made.

For some, though, this acceptance does not come easy. It is often difficult to look beyond the history, the past, the memories; and to come to the realisation that life might be better without this person.

But we must ask ourselves whether their presence is having a positive effect on our life or a negative one. And whether having them around is worth all the pain. Once we discover the answers to these questions, we will find ourselves much closer to the truth.

Because although letting go can be difficult at first, putting off the inevitable is so much worse. Let yourself have the life that you deserve with the people who deserve YOU. Remember that life is too short to spend time with those who don’t deserve your time. Always know that you are much more deserving of happiness than you think you are.

  1. Acceptance of ‘Let Go’ is difficult. You have stated this aptly. Another aspect of ‘Let Go’ philosophy is letting go of those thoughts that bind us to our unpleasant experiences. Physical distance may still be acceptable but mental distance or letting go the thoughts provides us the space and time to truly enjoy our lives.

    1. Hi Vinod,

That is very true. Sometimes we choose to keep people in our lives, but it doesn’t mean the negative thoughts and feeings go away automatically. We often need closure within ourselves and to find acceptance. We have to either choose to live in the past, or choose to move on. It is definitely a difficult process no matter who you are – it’s just a case of doing what we believe is right for us.
